Age calculation

Age calculation is the process of finding the elapsed time between a date of birth and a later reference date, conventionally expressed as completed years, then completed months, then the remaining days. On the Gregorian calendar this requires borrowing across the differing lengths of months and across leap years (February has 29 days in a leap year), which is why a simple day-count divided by 365 is inexact. The same elapsed interval can also be expressed as a total number of months, weeks, days, hours or minutes.

Exact age is found by subtracting the birth date from today one unit at a time: first the completed years, then the completed months since your last birthday, then the remaining days. When the day-of-month has not yet been reached, the calculator borrows the length of the previous month (28, 29, 30 or 31 days) so February and the 31-day months come out right. How the Age Calculator Works

AnyTool Age Calculator computes exact age in the browser using a pure, clock-free engine: the page decides what “today” is and passes that calendar date plus the date of birth to the engine, which counts completed years, then completed months, then the remaining days. To make the day count correct it borrows the real length of the preceding month — 28, 29, 30 or 31 days — and accounts for leap years, so February and the 31-day months are handled properly. The same interval is then expressed as total months, weeks, days, hours and minutes, and all date arithmetic is done in UTC to stay immune to daylight-saving shifts.

Calendar, Time-Zone and Lunar-Year Caveats

The tool is accurate on the Gregorian calendar but states its limits plainly. Hours and minutes are whole days multiplied by 24 and 1440, so the exact time of day is not included unless a different reference date is chosen. Because age is measured against the device’s local calendar, the time zone can change what counts as “today” by a day near midnight. The Chinese zodiac is mapped by Gregorian year, whereas the true sign follows the lunar year that begins between January 21 and February 20, so January or early-February births may belong to the previous animal.
