How do I change the aspect ratio of an image?

Add the picture to the Image Aspect Ratio Changer, pick a ratio such as 1:1, 4:5, 9:16 or 16:9, and choose Crop (cut the edges, slide to choose what stays) or Fit (keep the whole picture and fill the bands with a colour, a blurred copy or transparency). Save it; nothing is stretched or uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choose Fit.

Fit keeps the whole picture and adds bands to reach the new shape. Fill them with any colour, a blurred copy of the picture (popular for Stories and Reels) or transparency (PNG or WebP).

No.

Crop cuts the edges and Fit adds bands; neither stretches the picture, so faces and objects keep their shape.

1:1, 4:5 and 9:16.

Square posts are 1:1, portrait posts 4:5 (1080 × 1350 px), and Stories and Reels 9:16 (1080 × 1920 px). Choose the ratio and the 1080 px width.

No.

It is changed in your browser. Like any canvas edit, the camera data (EXIF) is not copied to the new file.

Detailed Explanation

Methodology

Crop or fit

Crop cuts out the largest area of the new shape that fits inside the picture, at the position you choose. Fit makes the smallest canvas of the new shape that holds the whole picture, centres it, and fills the rest with a colour, a blurred copy of the picture or transparency.

  • Largest crop
  • Smallest fit
Technical Details

Output size

By default the result keeps the picture's own resolution. Width presets (1080, 1200, 1920 px) scale it down to that width; a smaller picture is never enlarged. JPG and WebP are saved at 92% quality, PNG losslessly.

  • Never enlarged
  • 92% JPG/WebP
Use Cases
