Estimated due date (EDD)

The estimated due date is the predicted day of birth, conventionally set at 40 weeks (280 days) from the first day of the last menstrual period using Naegele’s rule. Gestational age is measured from that same LMP, so it runs about two weeks ahead of the embryo’s true age because ovulation and conception happen around cycle day 14. Because cycles vary and labour is unpredictable, the EDD is an estimate: only about 4–5% of babies are born on it, and term birth spans 37 to 42 weeks.
