How the Reading Speed Test Works
AnyTool Reading Speed Test runs entirely in the browser. It counts the words in the chosen passage in advance, starts a timer when you begin reading, and stops it when you click Done. Reading speed is the word count divided by the elapsed time in minutes. A short multiple-choice quiz then measures comprehension, and the tool reports an effective words-per-minute figure equal to your raw speed multiplied by your comprehension percentage.
- Reading speed = passage word count ÷ elapsed minutes
- Timing starts when you begin and stops when you click Done
- Comprehension is the share of quiz questions answered correctly
- Effective WPM weighs speed by comprehension so skimming scores lower
- All scoring is client-side JavaScript — no server round-trip
