How the Story Name Generator Works
AnyTool Story Name Generator builds every name in the browser from a bundled, family-friendly data set. Character names combine curated real first names — grouped by genre (modern, fantasy, sci-fi, medieval) and gender — with matching surnames, while fantasy and sci-fi results also mix in fresh names assembled syllable by syllable. Places, titles and guild names are produced from hand-picked prefix, suffix and word-piece pools using small grammar templates.
- Curated clean name lists plus a syllable assembler (onset + vowel + coda)
- Genre and gender filters for character first names and surnames
- Place templates for cities, kingdoms, taverns and planets
- Title and guild grammars such as “The {Noun} of {Place}”
- All generation is client-side JavaScript — no server round-trip
Controls, Filters and Favourites
A single Generate button produces a batch of unique names — up to fifty at once — and every result has a copy button and a favourite star saved in local storage. Controls let you set the syllable length of invented names, require a specific starting letter, and choose how many to generate. The generator de-duplicates within a batch and uses a bounded retry budget so a strict starting-letter filter never hangs the page.
- Generate many names at once, each with copy and a favourite star
- Syllable-length control sizes invented fantasy and sci-fi names
- Starting-letter filter for themed or alliterative casts
- Within-batch de-duplication with a bounded retry budget
- Favourites persist locally with no account or tracking
Originality and Responsible Use
Names are generated suggestions, not vetted brands, so writers and game masters are encouraged to check trademarks and search existing works before using a name commercially. The underlying word lists are curated to stay clean and family-friendly, and because everything runs locally the tool works offline and never sends your choices anywhere.
