GIF to APNG

Convert an animated GIF to an animated PNG (APNG) with exactly the same frames, timing and loop, in your browser

How do I convert a GIF to APNG?

Drop a .gif on GIF to APNG: it is converted in your browser and shown next to the original, and you download an animated PNG with the same frames, the same timing and the same loop. The pixels are identical; nothing is uploaded.

  • Lossless: every frame keeps its exact pixels
  • Same frame delays and loop count
  • Only the changed part of each frame is stored
  • Plays in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari

What is

APNG (animated PNG)

An extension of PNG that stores several frames with their own delays, so a .png file can animate. Unlike GIF it allows 24-bit colour and smooth transparency; viewers without APNG support show the first frame.

How to convert a GIF to APNG

Turn an animated GIF into an animated PNG in your browser.

  1. 1

    Add the GIF

Drop a .gif file on the page; it is converted right away.

  2. 2

    Compare

The original and the APNG play side by side.

  3. 3

    Adjust if needed

Choose the loop (same as the GIF, forever or once) and the frame timing.

  4. 4

    Download

Click Download APNG; the file has the .png extension.

Result: An animated PNG (APNG) file

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, frame for frame.

Each GIF frame is drawn the way browsers draw GIFs, including transparency and the GIF's disposal rules, and the APNG frame has the same pixels and the same delay.

It often is; the pixels are the same.

PNG compression is lossless and works differently from GIF's. The tool keeps files small by merging identical frames, storing only the area that changed in each frame, and using a 256-colour palette when the GIF has 256 colours or fewer, but the APNG can still be larger.

Yes, like the GIF.

The loop count is copied from the GIF. A GIF with no loop setting plays once, and so does the APNG; you can choose 'forever' or 'once' instead.

Anywhere modern.

APNG plays in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera, on iPhone and Android, and it is the format of Discord and LINE animated stickers. Apps without APNG support show the first frame.

No.

The GIF is decoded and the APNG is written in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.

Browsers slow down very short GIF frames.

Browsers show GIF frames of 0 or 0.01 s for 0.1 s. With 'Keep the speed browsers play' on (the default), the APNG gets 0.1 s for those frames too, so it plays at the speed you saw.

Detailed Explanation

Technical Details

How the conversion works

The GIF is decoded frame by frame with gifuct-js and composited as a browser does: transparent pixels keep what is underneath, disposal 2 clears the frame's area and disposal 3 restores the previous picture. Each composited frame is written to the APNG, so both files show the same pixels at the same times.

  • Exact pixels
Methodology

How the file is kept small

Frames identical to the previous one are merged into it (their delays add up). Every other frame stores only the rectangle that changed. If the GIF's colour tables hold 256 colours or fewer, the APNG uses a palette of 1 byte per pixel; otherwise it is full colour.

  • Merged duplicates
  • Changed areas only
How It Works

Timing and loop

GIF delays are in hundredths of a second. Browsers play 0 and 0.01 s as 0.1 s; by default the APNG gets the same 0.1 s. The GIF's loop count is copied; a GIF without one plays once.

  • 0–0.01 s frames → 0.1 s
  • Loop count copied

A GIF converted to APNG keeps its 256 colours; APNG's extra colour depth matters for animations made as APNG from the start.
